The additional boost would give Stott an needed edge to propel the former World Champion into the top half of the field.

"There was five of us all packed together with 6.11s going into the final round of qualifying," Stott said. "I knew we were going to have to turn it up a notch if we were going to qualify well."

The 6.095 that Stott's LeeBoy team registered Saturday night would be good enough to place them in the number eight position. "With the Sportsman ladder that we run over here in IHRA the #8 spot is not a bad place to be," Stott continued.
Stott would save his best run of the event for the opening round of eliminations on Sunday. The 6.055 was the second best elapsed time of the opening round. Event winner Kenny Lang would post a slightly better mark in round one and again in the semi-final round.

"We've got 25 more pounds strapped on us this year and we were still able to run within a hundredth of our best time last season (6.040 at the fall Rockingham event). We're OK. Don't count us out just yet."

The next stop for the LeeBoy Equipment team is the Motor City Nationals in Milan, Michigan, May 23-25.

Stott, a North Carolina native calls the drag strip situated in the sand hills of eastern Carolina home. Thirty-four season later, Stott will again make the trip this week for the IHRA Spring Nationals April 18-20.

"I started racing a '67 Camaro when I was 15-years-old," Stott explains. "I don't want people thinking I'm too old."

While Stott may have started young, he's been around long enough to see many changes in the sport. One of the biggest changes that Stott sees is the effect money has had on the sport. "When I started it took a lot of talent to drag race. Now it seems money out-weighs talent. It's a long way from where I started."

While Stott continues to enjoy drag racing, he also enjoys one of the longest standing sponsorships in motor sports. His 12 year relationship with LeeBoy Equipment has grown from a sponsorship, to a partnership to a friendship. "The LeeBoy relationship has really been good," said Stott. "I couldn't even begin to thank everyone involved. It truly is a great partnership. They help us go racing - we help them sell equipment. It's a lot of fun."

While Stott has completed 13 consecutive seasons within the top 10 point standings, he knows the current season is the most important. "Every year you have to go out here in prove yourself again," the veteran said. "Someone is always looking for a way to beat you. We're just going to keep working hard and keep testing and tuning. Hopefully that will continue to give us the edge we need to be a little quicker on race day."

Stott left the Nitro Jam's opening event after a quarter final appearance in San Antonio in sixth position with 10 events remaining. "There's a lot of racing between now and the World Finals," Stott said. "It's going to be fun to see how all this pans out."

Just before the semi-final round Quain Stott walked over to his Torco Race Fuels powered 1963 LeeBoy Equipment Corvette. He quietly signed and then peeled the number one decal from the windshield that he worked so hard for the previous year and walked towards Scott Cannon. After placing the well deserved decal on Scott Cannon's car, Stott talked and joked with the younger Cannon about next season.

"I told Scott that he and his team did a great job this season," Stott said. "I put that number one on his windshield and told him to put his boxing gloves on because I was coming back for it next year," he joked.

Defending his 2006 Championship was something that Stott stayed concerned about all season long. "It could be football or baseball or racing, you see a team come out after a championship and not perform very well." Stott added. "We were aware of that and wanted to make sure that we came out and represented our championship well for LeeBoy, Torco and our fans. I think we did a pretty good job."

For the second season in a row Stott has qualified for every IHRA event and for the 13th season in a row he has finished in the top 10. Seven of the top 10 finishes were top five. Stott completed the 2007 season in the fifth position highlighted with two runner-up finished (Tulsa and Epping) and tow semi-final appearances (San Antonio and Grand Bend).

The season ending event in Rockingham was also an eventful experience for the Columbus, North Carolina based team. LeeBoy Equipment announced that they will remain the primary sponsor on the Corvette fielded by Quain Stott Drag Racing.

Stott would also dedicate the race to Hannah Martin and display a special "Pray for Hannah" decal on the car. Hannah is the sister of McCoy Martin of Central Asphalt and Paving a good friend and loyal LeeBoy customer. Hannah is continuing to recover from auto accident earlier this year.

Quain Stott Drag Racing would also use this race to celebrate the life of long time AMX Racer, Randy McCorkle. McCorkle passed away earlier this year. Stott would take McCorkle's ashes for a ride on Friday. Friday's qualifying attempt put Stott in the fifth position with 6.169 second pass. McCorkle would be remembered again when his ashes were packed into the parachutes of Stott's car during Saturday's afternoon qualifying attempt.

Stott is already planning his 2008 tour. "The 2007 season was good," Stott said. "We've got a lot of testing to do to get ready for next season. While we're planning 2008 we can't help but think about all of our friends and the people that make this all possible. Kelly Majeskie from LeeBoy and Even Knoll from Torco Race Fuels have been by our side for a lot of years and we're looking forward to a lot more with them as our marketing partners."

The defending Torco Competition Plus Pro Modified World Champion has carried the LeeBoy Paving Equipment, Torco Race Fuels powered Corvette to two semi-final and two runner-up finishes in 2007. While that performance is good, it won't be good enough for Stott to repeat as World Champion.

Stott, who currently sits fifth in points with a chance to finish as high as third an no worse than eighth, will assure his team and sponsors another top 10 finish in Pro Modified, pushing the longest running streak of top 10 finishes to 12.

"We really wanted to come out here this year and do well," Stott said. "So many times you see a team go out one year and win a championship and come back the next year and struggle just to stay in the top 10. It's been a long time since anyone has been able to repeat as champion in Pro Mod. That's just a testament to how tough these teams are out here. Anyone can win it in any given year."
"LeeBoy, Evan Knoll and Torco have been with us for a long time," Stott continued. "Our success is directly related to their support. I hope we're all together for another decade of top 10 finishes."

Stott and his team will also be dedicating the race to Hannah Martin. Hannah is the sister of McCoy Martin of Central Asphalt and Paving a good friend and loyal LeeBoy customer. Hannah is continuing to recover from a car accident a few months ago.

Stott will also be celebrating the life of legendary AMX Racer, Randy McCorkle, when the parachutes open during Saturday qualifying on the LeeBoy Corvette. Stott's chutes will be packed with McCorkle's ashes. "I wanted to give Randy one more ride down the quarter-mile," Stott said. "It's really a fitting tribute to a guy that loved drag racing so much." Quain Stott searched and finally found the problem that kept the Torco Race Fuels powered Lee Boy Corvette from its usual high level of performance.

"It's just one of those things that happen sometimes when you put new parts on a race car," Stott said. "We found it, it's fixed and we're ready to go racing again."

Stott would have a chance to prove his point at this weekends Torco Race Fuels President's Cup Nationals at the Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek. Stott would make solid qualifying passes with Saturday nights attempt being best (6.096 at 235.06 mph), landing his team in the upper half of the field.

Stott's refound performance edge would be put to the test early during eliminations. In a first round match with former World Champion Mike Castellana, Stott's car would rattle the tires early. A quick twitch of the gas pedal and a touch of the brakes would settle the car down and allow Quain to apply all of the horsepower needed to run down Castellana at the top end of the race track. The win would send Stott to a showdown with the New York based team of Mike Janis.

The Stott-Janis showdown would be a classic drag race with Stott taking the starting line advantage. The side by side duel ended a quarter mile later, both teams over 239 mph and Janis with the bumper and 0.0123 second advantage at the stripe.

"That was a great drag race," Stott said. "I just wish it was our bumper out front. Mike Janis and Scott Cannon have tough cars to beat right now. It will be interesting to see who can win it all at Rockingham."

Stott has defended his 2006 World Championship well, but finds himself mathematically challenged to repeat in 2007. Currently in the top five in points and the only driver to finish in the top 10 for 12 consecutive years, Stott is happy with the teams season. "I was so worried about coming out here this year and not doing well," Stott said as he left the race. "So many times you see where someone wins a championship and then has a tough time the next season. I think we had another quality season of racing and we still have another race to go. LeeBoy, Evan Knoll and Torco Race Fuels and all of our sponsors have been so go to us over the years. I can't thank them enough. I always hope that we can make them proud and represent them well where ever we race."

While Stott was reluctant to pick his the 2007 Pro Modified Champion, he did offer some insight. "Mike Janis is running really hard right now and if the season were a couple of races longer I think he could make a run at Scott," Stott said. "But Scott and Scotty have went out there and dominated the Last Man Standing. They've won 10 of the possible 18 additional five point bonuses. That's going to be hard for anyone to overcome."

Whether it's pushing the tree for every thousandth of reaction time he can garner or tweaking a tune-up for every possible ounce of horsepower, it's just another day at the races for Quain Stott.

But, before race day ever comes, you'll find Stott and his crew beating the streets from Darlington to the Carolina Dragway testing and testing and testing. If practice makes perfect, than Stott might have a corner on the market. With a sly smile and southern charm he'll try and convince you that he doesn't test that much... anymore. And like that old joke about the guy that doesn't drink anymore, he doesn't any less either.

Stott is working just as hard now as he ever has. Maybe smarter too, but just as hard.
"There's so many good teams and well-funded teams out here. You've got to figure out a way to stay a step ahead of them," Stott said.

This weekend, Stott takes his outlaw Torco powered LeeBoy Corvette to a track not far from his Columbus, North Carolina race shop. The Rockingham Dragway will host the ADRL's Eastern Race Fuels Drag Stock IV. It's close enough to feel like home and a track that Stott has plenty of experience with.

"Rockingham has one of the quickest tracks around," Stott said. "I was really surprised that someone hasn't broken the 200 mph barrier in the eighth mile ADRL yet. We got close in Valdosta and Jason Scruggs got even closer in Norwalk (199.11 mph). If the conditions are right in Rockingham, I think someone will take $10,000 (award for first car to go 200 mph) from Kenny (Nowling, President of ADRL)."

In his ADRL career, Stott has three wins and a .800 winning percentage. He was also 10-1 in his first 11 Pro Extreme rounds. "The ADRL has always been good to us," Stott added. "I wish our schedule allowed us to run more of these races. The fans are great and they bring a lot of excitement for Pro Modified racing."

This season, Stott is also defending his IHRA Pro Modified Championship. He's currently in forth place, just 87 points behind Scott Cannon, Jr. with three races remaining.

Quain Stott Drag Racing partners with high performance companies like, LeeBoy Equipment, Torco Race Fuels, Richmond Gear, Mickey Thompson Tires, NGK Spark Plugs, Auto Meter, Stroud Safety, Santhuff Shocks, Fulton Race Engines, Stroupe Race Cars and Spartan Crank Shafts.

So, there is no time like the present if Stott wants to be the first person to win back to back championships since the early 90's when Scotty Cannon owned it between 1991-1994.

With four races remaining, Stott finds himself third in points, just 68 points from Scotty Cannon, Jr. "I think we're just about the same place we were last year," Stott said. With four races remaining in the 2006 season Stott was in third place and trailed Glen Kerunsky by just 17 points.

"We've ran about as well as we did last year, Scotty is just tough this year," Stott added. "Plus, I think he owns the Last Man Standing award (earning 5 additional points on Friday and Saturday night for low ET)."

Cannon has claimed six of the 13 possible Last Man Standing awards.

In the high stakes game of Pro Modified racing, Stott knows that its time to show the muscle of his Fulton powered Corvette. "We're leaning on our parts pretty hard," said Stott. "You hate to do that, but we've got to find every once of horse power, every hundredth of a second. We're not going to leave anything on the table."

Qualifying for the Suzuki City Motor City Nationals begins Friday, August 24 and is followed by two more qualifying rounds on Saturday before Sunday eliminations.

Martin, Mich. - Back to back races on the Knoll Gas Motorsports Nitro Jam Drag Racing series leaves little time to wonder about what might have been. Quain Stott's LeeBoy Equipment Corvette leaves the Torco Race Fuels Northern Nationals a little banged up, but not much worse for the wear.

Stott would take his strong qualifying effort (#5 6.123ET 234.00MPH) and face Mark Nielson in round one. Stott would bank a .106 second lead at the tree setting up what should have been a decisive first round win. As the race progressed, Stott's Torco powered machine began to shake. Twice he avoided contact with the wall, the third encounter would cause Stott to brush the wall, leaving a "Martin" racing stripe down most of right side of the car.

"I've got a little bit of a headache from that," Stott explained on the return road shortly after the incident. "But the headache is from losing that round. The points are getting pretty tough out here and it just hurts to have that kind of lead and end up losing the race. If Scotty keeps winning this 'Last Man Standing Award' (5 bonus points for fastest night time qualifying runs) it will be nearly impossible to catch him."

After watching the rain delayed finals on Monday and spending some time repairing the car, the LeeBoy team left for Epping New Hampshire for the Amalie Oil North American Nationals.

"I guess I should apologize in advance," said Stott. "I'm bringing a banged up car to Epping. But there's just no time to fix it before the race. Walley Stroupe is on standby, so as soon as we get home he'll have it fixed up like new."

Stott's Martin mishap is not his first encounter with the wall. "I remember back in 2003, racing my brother Mitch for the championship," Stott said. "It was at Epping that year when I hit the wall pretty good. So, I guess it only makes sense to take this banged up car there. Who knows, maybe we can win one with it like this."

Stott's former teammate, Tommy D'Aprile, will be competing at Epping. He had encouraging words for Stott. "All the races I did with Quain I never wrecked his car," Tommy said enroute to the race. "That's all he ever asked of me. I put in on the beach once in Milan, that was it and I took a lot of ribbing from Quain and the guys about that. So, I've loaded my suitcase up with some purple duct tape. I just want to make sure I do my part to help Quain out," D'Aprile joked.

After qualifying seventh, Stott attempted to tame the track with successful wins against Mike Castellana and Kenny Lang before bowing out to event winner Raymond Commisso.

"It was a tough track," said Stott. "No matter what I did, I couldn't find the right set up for the track."

While Stott struggled to find the right combination, he continued to go rounds, matching fellow Fulton Racing Engine entry Jim Halsey round for round before falling in the semifinals.

"Halsey and I kept saying we were going to stick together," added Stott. "Gene Fulton gave us both lots of horsepower. Unfortunately, we both went out in the semifinals."

While Stott was excited about the weekend's results (currently fourth in points and just 45 points out of second place), he was just as frustrated. In an attempt to gain an advantage over his fellow competitors, Stott remained in Grand Bend on Monday for an additional day of testing.

"We're right there," said Stott. "We just have to find that little something extra to catch up with Scotty Cannon. Plus, we want to make sure we're prepared for Martin and Torco's CompetitionPlus.com Pro Mod Shootout."

Stott is currently qualified fifth for the upcoming shootout which has over $50,000 in prize money posted for competitors.

"There will be a lot riding on the Torco race in Martin," said Stott. "There are not only points riding on that race, but the $50,000 that Evan Knoll puts up for the shootout. You can be sure the Pro Mod action will be hot and heavy."

The Torco Racing Fuels Northern Nationals is the 6th stop on the Knoll Gas Motorsports Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series. It will be contested August 3-5 at the Knoll Gas Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan.

TULSA, Okla. - While the Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Season is young, every team knows that each and every round is important. The same is true for Quain Stott and his 1963 LeeBoy Corvette powered by Torco Race Fuels.

The final round appearance moved Stott up two spots to fifth in the season long defense of his World Championship crown. Stott now trails fourth place Ed Hoover by just three points and is just 72 points behind leader Scott Cannon, Jr. The runner-up marked the 22nd time Stott has made a final round appearance in his career, tieing Stott with Mike Janis for second among active and fourth among all Pro Modified drivers.

Stott would make the most of his run to the finals, knocking off Ed Hoover in round one and perennial rival Shannon Jenkins in round two. Stott's round two perforce [6.153ET]was second best of the round to Scott Cannon, Jr.[6.122ET] and would set up a head to head match-up in the semi-finals.

Stott would take a huge hole shot and need every bit of it to hold off Cannon's 6.154ET to Stott's 6.221ET. "I guess Scott had an electrical problem or something that caused his dash lights to go out," Stott said. Stott would go long on the pass when his parachute handle malfunctioned sending the Fulton Competition Engine powered Corvette into the sand traps.

"We hurt the front end a little," Stott said. "Mostly cosmetic, but there was sand everywhere. I can't thank my crew enough, plus guys like Danny Rowe, Jimmy Rector and Kelly "The Welder" [Campbell] and others were over there helping us. I'm not sure we could have done it without them."

The final round would prove to be somewhat costly for Stott. He would give back 15 points [for sand on the track] and damage the motor in his loss to nitrous powered Pat Stoken.

"Anytime you go in the sand it's nearly impossible to get it all out of there without getting it back to the shop and putting it up on the rack. As soon as I did the burnout I knew we were going to have a rough time. When my crew chef Brandon Howard came on the radio and told me to hold up for a minute while they tried to sweep away some of the sand that shook out of the car I thought about saving the points. But, our sponsors and fans come to see a race. We gave it our best shot."

Despite the sand, Stott would make a race of it for Stoken. "There's no doubt he had a strong car," Stott added. "But we were leaning on that motor pretty hard. We nipped a piston, banged the burst panel and threw the blower belt off, but we still made a race out of it. We're pretty happy with the weekend. Gene Fulton and Walley Stoupe have given me a great car to race with. LeeBoy Equipment and Evan at Torco Race Fuels have given us great backing and support to go out and make a run at a second championship. We're very proud of our sponsors and all they do for this sport."

Stott left Tulsa for Edmonton, Alberta Canada to defend his CARS RV & Marine & Motorsports Rocky Mountain Nationals in the fourth stop on the Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam.

The year was 1995 or maybe 1996, more than a decade of laps have faded Quain Stott's memory. While some parts of a memory can fade, others are cast in stone. Such is the case for Stott's last trip to Tulsa as an un-funded team trying to make a name for itself. As a young team, Stott depended on round wins on Sunday to earn enough money just to have gas to get to the next race.

"It was '95 or '96," he recalled. "It was my first full season on the tour and I had this old Beretta and we were racing Tulsa. We won the first round, but we knew going into round two it was going to be tough to compete with the well-funded Larry Nance team with Pat Moore driving."
Stott quickly prepared his car hoping to make the best of the pending David vs Goliath match-up. Just minutes before the call to the staging lines, Stott thought he might have found the lucky break that any young team needs.

"It was about fifteen minutes before the second round," Stott recalls. "I look over in Pat Moore's pits and I see engine parts everywhere. There's guys thrashing around everywhere and I'm thinking to myself, there's no way they're going to be ready in fifteen minutes. I walked over and told my guys that we might have caught a break and we'll get a bye into the semi-finals. Just about that time the whole place goes quite. No announcer, no racing, nothing is happening."

A racer leaving the track had just hit the electrical lines that supply the track, causing a two-hour delay. The delay gave Nance and Moore plenty of time to make the repairs needed to put Stott on the trailer in round two.

"I really feel like that track owes me at least one round," said the defending Torco Competition Plus Pro Modified Champion.

But before Stott will have a chance to collect his round, he'll have to make what has become one of the toughest fields in all of drag racing. "There's a lot of tough teams out there," Stott said. "Where just a one car team and making the show isn't a given for anyone. But, we've done some more testing and this LeeBoy Equipment, Torco Racing Fuels powered Corvette is ready to take a shot at it in Tulsa."

If it had doors on it, Stott has probably tuned it up and took it to a race. His early career experiences tuning and racing many types of cars paid big dividends at the ADRL Camp Motorsport Georgia Drags this past weekend.

The North Carolinian and 2006 IHRA Torco Comp Plus Pro Mod champion nearly missed the race. It's not uncommon for Stott and his crew to put the Torco powered LeeBoy Corvette through hundreds of testing laps in a season. If the pace for this season is any indication, 200 laps will be a starting point.

"We were out testing our outlaw car earlier in the week," explained Stott, who has the distinction of being a successful tuner and driver for both a nitrous injected and blower Pro Mod cars. "The screw blower is an entirely new set up for us," he added. "After we broke in testing I was about ready to just take it home and park it. But, the ADRL fans are always so good to us and I promised Tommy [D'Aprile] I would help him tune his car. So, we were going to be there no matter what it took."
So, when Stott showed up in Valdosta, it was not without reservation. "I like to test," said Stott. "Testing helps us to know exactly what the car likes and what it wants to do in different situations. Coming into Valdosta we only had six passes on the car and some of those were just shake down runs. Testing in front of a big crowd like we had in Valdosta is not ideal. We didn't come there to test - we came to win."

With one last qualifying chance, Stott would find his way into the field. "That screw blower makes so much boost, you really just have to find a way to harness all that power and get it down the track, Stott said.

But, once Stott found the combination and made the race, he knew what he wanted to do in eliminations. In round one, Stott was able to set low ET with a 3.85ET @ 190MPH in the 1/8th mile. What made that lap interesting? The blower belt kicked off the motor just 3.2 seconds into the run. "That may have been a 70's [3.79ET or less] pass," crew chief Brandon Howard would explain after the race.

Stott would bow out in the quarter-finals after a tire shaking pass left him just short of being first to the stripe.

Stott also helped tune Tommy D'Aprile to a semi-final appearance in a brand new race car. "Tommy's a great guy and one heck of a driver," Stott said. "He got comfortable quickly in that car and we were able to find a tune-up that ran well. It was a great weekend. I hope we can do it again real soon."

Stott and his crew are currently studying the ADRL schedule and hope to attend several of the races this season. While a scheduled has not been finalized, Stott hoped to make the next stop on the ADRL tour, the AMS Staff Leasing Summer Drags, June 1-2 in Huntsville, Ala.

For Quain Stott and his Torco Race Fuels powered LeeBoy Corvette, a quarter mile wouldn't seem like an honest days work. Even though the off season was filled with testing, Stott continues to cover as much asphalt as a LeeBoy paver pulling a double shift.

After a season opening semi-final finish in San Antonio and first round lost in Rockingham, Stott immediately packed up and headed for the AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge contested at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals.

"I was a little disappointed with myself in Rockingham," said Stott. "I had to race Danny Rowe and Jimmy Rector in the first round and I didn't want to leave anything on the table. So, I did something I normally don't do. I set my race car up to race them instead of just setting it up to run my race. Needless to say I couldn't wait to get to Atlanta."

While the AMS Atlanta race wasn't on the Quain Stott Racing schedule, Stott didn't waste the opportunity to get more laps for his team and his car. "We received an invite to come over there and race," Stott said. "I guess you could call it a bonus race for our sponsors. It was a chance for us to get Evan Knoll from Torco and Kelly Majeskie from LeeBoy some more exposure. Plus it gave us another chance to race since we had some stuff we wanted to try."

Racing back to back weekends at different sanctioned events presents a unique set of challenges. "It a little tougher than it might look," explained Stott. "All the rules are just a little different now. Then, if you're racing one of these Corvettes, the NHRA make you throw an extra 50 pounds in there. That will add at least five hundredths to your ET."

Stott's 50 pound heavy Corvette ran consistent numbers all weekend in Atlanta, although his respectable 6.130ET at 235.10MPH wouldn't be enough to upset Joshua Hernandez, who would go on to win the event.

"We made a lot of headway this past weekend," said Stott. "We've still got a little tinkering left to do, but it's not a horsepower issue. We've got plenty of that."

Quain Stott Drag Racing will add another unscheduled bonus stop in southern Georgia again this coming weekend when the LeeBoy Corvette, powered by Torco Racing Fuels competes at the ADRL's Camp Motorsports Georgia Drags, May 4-5 at the South Georgia Motorsports Park in Valdosta.

COLUMBUS, NC - When Quain Stott pulls the LeeBoy Equipment Corvette off of the transporter in Rockingham, North Carolina later this week, he'll have taken the long way to get there. In some ways, that's just appropriate for Stott, even though North Carolina is home for the Torco Race Fuels powered team.

Stott has spent most of his drag racing career competing around the Tar Heel state and could probably put the truck on auto pilot and it would find its way to "The Rock" without incident. But, nothing is ever as easy at it seems. Especially for Stott. He left Tuesday morning to make the 175 mile journey to Rockingham Dragway. Stott and his team will make at least one stop before arriving Thursday. Farmington, North Carolina will be the pit stop Stott needs for a little piece of mind before arriving in Rockingham for the IHRA Spring Nationals presented by Advance Auto on April 21-22.

"Farmington is a great place for us to test," Stott said. "It's a little test and tune for us. Heck it's a lot of test and tune for us. We'll put more laps on this car in testing than it will ever see during racing this season."

Stott has long been known as one of the hardest working guys in racing. From tuning the car, to driving it in competition, to loading the car up and driving it from race to race, he continues to do it all. "There are a lot of teams out here that will spend a ton of money to come out here and go fast," Stott explained. "I've always had the attitude that we'll just try and outwork them, because I sure don't want to try and outspend them."

The hard work has paid off for Stott for more than a decade. Since 1995, Stott remains the only Pro Modified driver to finish every season in the top 10, including the 2006 championship. Six of the past 12 season Stott has finished in the top five, racing with both a nitrous injected car and a blower car over that time period.

"We've been lucky and blessed," Stott said from his cell phone enroute to Farmington. "LeeBoy has been with us for nine of those season and Evan Knoll and Torco have been with us for 10 of them. With strong partnerships like that it helps us race with consistency."

While some say the harder you work the luckier you get, Stott knows that it takes a lot of both to stay competitive. "It took us 12 years to win a Pro Mod championship. I've got to do it at least one more time to prove it wasn't a fluke. We're going to have to work that much harder just to stay anywhere near the top. There are a lot of really good teams out here."

LeeBoy and Stott call Rockingham their home track and this race won't be any different. LeeBoy Equipment will have a great hospitality area hosted by Arrow Equipment in the Quain Stott Racing pits. "Saturday is always intense," Stott added. "It's the last chance at qualifying and there are always so many LeeBoy and Arrow Equipment customers that I look forward to seeing."

With a new car and the first race of his championship defense, that should be big news. Quain knows that racing without a sponsor is nearly impossible in modern day drag racing. It couldn't be more true of this event.

During Friday night qualifying, IHRA noticed that the track had soft spots in the pavement, creating an unsafe racing environment. In most cases, everyone would pack up and try another day. Skooter Peaco, Vice President of Race Operations for IHRA knew there were alternatives. He picked up the phone and called Stott to see if LeeBoy could help.
"There's not much Kelly Majeskie and the LeeBoy crew can't do," Quain said after the race. "It was one of the strangest requests I've ever made to a sponsor - but they stepped in and saved the day."

Within minutes of Peaco's call, Stott had LeeBoy representative Elaine Stevens on the phone. "When Quain called he said he had a strange request," Stevens explained. "Getting a crew together on a Friday could be a challenge, but we called some of our LeeBoy representatives and they were able to have someone here before the evening qualifying session was over."

Elaine relied on Marty Rodriques, one of LeeBoy's best representatives in the area with Nichols Road Building Division. When the Saturday morning sun rose, Marty could be found riding LeeBoy equipment borrowed from the display equipment in Stott's pits. "It really took a team effort," Stevens added. "It took everyone from IHRA to Marty to the paving company believing that this project could be done overnight."

By 11:00AM the San Antonio Raceway had a brand new right lane. In fact by Sunday eliminations, the right lane was the lane of choice for most competitors.

Aaron Polburn, president of IHRA was appreciative of everyone's efforts. "A lot of times we talk about partnerships in racing," he said. "LeeBoy has always given support to Quain, we're certainly glad they were there to help."

Stott would go on to race his LeeBoy Corvette, qualifying 14th for the tough field. He would knock off John Russo in round one and Jim Halsey in round two, before falling to Ed Hoover in the semifinals.

"I'm really happy about the weekend," Stott explained. "We came out here with a brand new Stroupe Race Car and filled it with Torco Race Fuel and took it to the semi's. We're ahead of where we were last year when we left here in the first round." Stott leaves San Antonio fourth in Knoll Gas Nitro Jam points.

Stott also had a chance to sit in the Jungle Jim tribute car and spoke with "Berserko Bob" Doerrer on 1320 TV about what it took to be a drag racer in the '70's.
